Here's Why You Have to Stop Outsourcing Your Success

Most of us have been conditioned to think someone else owns our career.

Our employer, our boss, our parents, the economy…

It makes sense.

For the first 20 years of our lives, someone else is in control. Our parents, our teachers, our professors and the education system. There are clear rules and if we follow them - we get a reward.

When we step into the workforce we assume we need to do the same. So we work hard, we keep our head down, we wait for our turn and we hope we’ll get what we want.

Essentially, we let someone else call the shots about OUR Career.

How weird is that?

Would you let someone tell you who to marry? Where to live? What to eat?

Then why would you let strangers decide what your career could look like?

If you want to get the job of your dreams, if you want a promotion or a raise, you have to take control of your career.

But what does that actually mean?

If you rely on someone else, like your manager, or the company you work for, to give you what you want and make decisions about your career, you are outsourcing your success. You are letting someone else DECIDE what you can and can't have. That's....not ideal . If you want to create your own success, you need to own your career. You need to be in the driver's seat, instead of cruising along as a passenger. Look, I get it. There's comfort in letting someone else decide. When I'm tired I let my husband choose what to order for dinner. It's so easy. BUT that's not a great strategy when it comes to your career. (it's also not the best strategy when you're secretly craving pasta and your hobby orders the steak) The truth is... No one will ever care about your career as much as you. no one. So it is up to you to take the reins. Let me give you an example that will make it clear why you HAVE to be in charge:

The average pay increase in America is 3% per year. If you let your company decide - that's what you'll get. BUT If you take control of your career and:

  • Qualify yourself for the next role

  • Apply for a promotion

  • Ask for a raise

  • Apply to work for a different company

You can increase your pay by 25% - 100%!! (That's not a typo)

Do you see the difference? Active vs. passive career management. Outsourcing your success vs. owning it.

Maybe it's time you asked yourself: Am I outsourcing my success, or am I owning it? You can keep waiting and hoping, but if you want to GUARANTEE your success, you have to be in control.
