What is Career Design (And Why You Need It)
10 years ago I read the 4 hour work week. I loved Tim Farris's approach to lifestyle design, so I decided to apply it to my career.
There was just one tiny problem... I wasn't an entrepreneur. I worked in the corporate world. A 4-hour work week wasn't an option...
But I fell in love with the concept of DESIGNING the life you want and started asking myself: how could I apply the same thinking to my corporate career?
If I wanted to DESIGN a career that I love, what would that look like?
We've been conditioned to think we need to work to make a living, but what if we could design a career that works for us, a career that empowers the life we want?
Building a great career isn’t just about the money or title, it’s about how you spend your time, how much you grow, the impact you make, and the fulfillment you experience.
Starting your own business isn’t the only way to gain financial or mental freedom. Your job can provide all of the above if you design it to fit your life, and not the other way around.
You can decide what your ideal career looks like - and build it.
That was my light bulb moment.

Sounds simple, but it changed everything.
I stopped thinking like an employee and started thinking like an entrepreneur with a corporate job.
That’s when everything changed.
I gained the courage to go after what I wanted.
I made a plan that eventually got me there, faster than I thought possible.
I stopped working myself to the ground and started working smarter. I worked less, and achieved more.
I was promoted 10 times in 15 years, received multiple bonuses, traveled the world, became a VP (twice) and actually enjoyed my 9-5.
I couldn’t believe that everything I had envisioned in my wildest dreams was becoming a reality.
The people around me kept telling me I was “so lucky” but I knew luck had nothing to do with it.
I just decided to stop having a career by default, and start living a career by design.
I used all the same tools and processes entrepreneurs use to build a thriving business to take control of my career and design the life I wanted to have.
Here’s the good news: you can do the same thing.
Career design is the ability to build a career on your own terms and create a career and life you love.
It means you are intentionally building your career to align with your dreams, instead of accepting the default.
Most people have no idea this is even an option.
They don’t realize they have the power to change their own story no matter where they are starting from, or what their circumstances are.
But you don't have to settle for the default or what is readily available.
You can design the career of your dreams if you can do two things:
Believe it's possible
Take action to make it a reality
That's it.
